Preserving Tradition, Creating Beauty

Who We Are

Retired professionals living "The Good Life"

If you contact us or meet us at one of the Wool events, you will quickly discover that we are enthusiasts!  We are very approachable and love chatting. We are now retired but our professional careers saw us working in very different business contexts.  Barry worked in the field of education for 40 years moving from classroom teacher to Adviser and finally Inspector and Caroline worked in a Law Firm for almost 30 years, leading the HR Team.  Activities with our sheep, looking after them, showing them and then in later years, pursuing the processing of their wool, provided an effective and much needed diversion from the demands and stress of our working lives.

Our story begins with a family holiday on the Isle of Man where we fell in love with Manx Loaghtan Sheep when we saw a  sizeable flock on the island at the Gibbs of the Grove Museum parkland, Ramsey.  This characteristic two or four horned sheep is indigenous to the Isle of Man and traces its own story back at least a thousand years.

Putting our displays together is always very enjoyable.Westart this the day before an event and finish off with the addition of valuable goods early on the opening morning. We have three mannequins named Hinge, Bracket and Isabella on which we display a number of sample garments. We generally have a large space to fill, and our displays attract many kind words.  We take down the display late on the final afternoon, catching up with other stall holders as to their successes and by early evening we are on our way home

Each event attracts a different audience which changes too from year to year. There are new questions, queries and decisions about what to make and what to buy and what to touch and feel on our stand.  In many cases, our enthusiasm about our sheep has been infectious and return attendees tell us not only about what they have made with our wool or cloth but also about their own Manx Loaghtan sheep as they start their own journey into sheep keeping!

Aran Knitting Yarn

Manx Loaghtan Aran Knitting Yarn

Our beautiful caramel coloured Manx Loaghtan Aran weight knitting yarn is so very soft and a joy with which to knit.  It slips off the needles with ease and knits well to create gorgeous and unique items of your choosing.

Our wool is balled in c. 50g balls providing yardage of c.76 which means c.70 meters.

We have held our prices at the same level for the past 2 years although our processing costs have increased.

 Portland Aran Knitting Yarn

Another rare sheep breed. The Portland sheep, which takes its name from the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England is a hardy and thrifty breed which can survive on very sparse grazing.

Primarily raised for its meat, we have found the Portland’s fleece provides a beautiful cream contrast for our Manx knitting yarn.

We have hanks of Aran weight Portland weighing c. 200gms.

We have held our prices at the same level for the past 2 years although our processing costs have increased.

Woven Woollen Cloth

The most exciting of all our sheep endeavours has most certainly been the processing of our fleece into weaving yarn, and then working with our weaver to have it woven into a range of beautiful cloths. Given that we are likely to be biased, our validation came with the positive reaction from the tailors to whom we took our Manx/Hebridean cloth.  They were extremely complimentary and went on to produce two three-piece suits which are always a delightful talking point.  We now have plan Manx cloth as well as weaves in Manx/Hebridean, Manx Wenslydale and Manx/Shetland.  They each have unique textures and are all suitable for clothing and household use such as curtains and upholstery.  These are all natural colours and weaves, there is no dye involved at any point in the processes.

We keep our bolts of cloth at home and bring cut cloth lengths to the Wool events.  Our cloth is c. X inches or c.X cms wide and we sell it by the meter

Woven Woollen Products

Our wool has also been processed into weaving yarn and then made into a number of beautiful products. We have these  in a variety of weave designs.

These include Pashminas, medium and large throws, and knee rugs.

These are all soft and light weight and surprisingly warm and our buyers tell us they are excellent for keeping in the warmth.
